People counting and footfall

A people counter at the entrance shows how many people visit your store, hour by hour. Combined with sales, it reveals what share of visitors buy and when you need more staff. StoreIQ installs people counting and footfall analytics for retailers across Sweden.

Know how many people visit your store

Your till shows how many people buy, but not how many come in and leave without purchasing. A people counter provides the other half of the picture. Ceiling-mounted sensors at the entrance count visitors in and out, and the data is collected by hour, day and store. That makes it possible to see patterns that would otherwise be hard to spot.

Counting is anonymous. The sensors count people passing through without identifying them and without storing images of individual visitors, which makes people counting a privacy-friendly way to understand footfall. We help you inform visitors clearly, and if you are unsure what applies, we recommend the guidance from IMY, the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection.

Conversion: the share of visitors who buy

Conversion: the share of visitors who buy

When footfall data is combined with the number of transactions at the till, you get your conversion rate, the share of visitors who actually make a purchase. It is one of the most useful measures in physical retail. If conversion drops at certain times, it may point to queues, too few staff or something in the store that is not working as it should.

Conversion also makes it easier to evaluate promotions, window displays and changes to the store. Did the campaign bring more people in, or did more of them buy? With both footfall and sales data you can answer questions like these with facts rather than gut feeling, and it becomes easier to justify decisions about staffing and layout internally.

Better staffing and opening hours

Footfall data shows when the store is busiest, giving you a solid basis for scheduling. Staff can be placed where and when customers are there, and opening hours can be adjusted to how visits are actually spread across the day and week. It may show, for example, that extra staff pay off on a certain afternoon, or that an early hour attracts very few visitors.

For chains, it becomes possible to compare stores and see which have the greatest potential. Reports are available in StoreIQ Hub, where you follow footfall and conversion by store, hour and day. Data can also be exported for further analysis alongside sales and staffing in your own reports and spreadsheets.

Installation and follow-up

We mount the sensors at each entrance, connect them to the network and check that the counts are accurate. The work is done outside opening hours and rarely takes long per entrance. If you have several entrances, or an entrance from a shopping centre, we adapt the positions so every visitor is counted, and we take staff movements into account as well.

After installation we help you get started with the reports and link them to your sales data. Under a service agreement we monitor that the sensors are working and help if anything needs adjusting. If you later want to add more stores or connect the data to other systems, such as scheduling or video analytics, you can build on the same solution.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is a people counter?

Modern ceiling sensors normally give good accuracy, but results depend on position, ceiling height and the layout of the entrance. We verify the counts after installation and adjust if needed, so the figures can be relied on in day-to-day decisions.

Is people counting compatible with GDPR?

People counters that count anonymously, without identifying individuals or storing images of visitors, are a privacy-friendly way to measure footfall. The assessment required depends on the technology used. The IMY guidance offers support if you are unsure.

How is the conversion rate calculated?

Conversion is the number of transactions at the till divided by the number of visitors in the same period. To make this work, the people counter is linked to your till data. We help you set up both the connection and the reports.

Does it work with several entrances?

Yes. Each entrance gets its own sensor, and visits are added together for the whole store. If you have both a street entrance and a shopping centre entrance, you can also see how visits are split between them.

Where can I see the statistics?

The statistics are collected in StoreIQ Hub, where you see footfall, conversion and trends by store, day and hour. Chains can compare stores side by side and follow developments over time.
