Electronic shelf labels (ESL)

Electronic shelf labels make sure the price on the shelf always matches the price at the till. You change a price once in your POS or ERP system and every label in the store updates automatically. StoreIQ plans, installs and looks after ESL systems for retailers across Sweden.

Electronic shelf labels (ESL)

Benefits for your store

  • The same price on the shelf as at the till
  • No more printing and swapping paper labels
  • Promotions that start and end automatically
  • Unit prices calculated from product data
  • Label lights for faster picking and restocking
  • Status for every label in StoreIQ Hub

How electronic shelf labels work

Each label has a small display with a long battery life and receives updates wirelessly from base stations mounted in the ceiling. When a price changes in your POS or ERP system, the update is sent to the right label, usually within minutes. Staff no longer need to print, sort and replace paper labels, and the risk of customers seeing one price on the shelf and another at the till drops considerably.

Labels come in several sizes, from small formats for cosmetics and spices to larger labels for chillers, freezers and DIY stores. We help you choose the right size for each shelf section and design a layout where price, unit price, promotion and product details are easy to read. The status of every label, including battery level and last update, can be followed in StoreIQ Hub.

Promotions, unit prices and price reduction rules

Promotions, unit prices and price reduction rules

With ESL, promotions can be scheduled to start and end on the exact minute, even when the store is closed. Unit prices per kilo, litre or item are calculated automatically from product data, which makes it easier to meet the requirements of the Swedish Price Information Act. Fast price changes, such as reductions on fresh food close to its best before date, also become far simpler to carry out.

Since the EU Omnibus Directive was introduced into Swedish law, the previous price shown in an announced price reduction should generally be the lowest price in the preceding 30 days. The system can display that price on the label, provided the price history is available in your ERP system. We recommend checking the details against guidance from the Swedish Consumer Agency, as the rules include exceptions.

More than prices: picking lights and QR codes

Many labels have a built-in light that can flash in different colours. It is used to find the right shelf position when picking online orders, click and collect and restocking, or to highlight products that need checking. In larger stores and builders merchants this can save staff a great deal of walking and makes it easier for new employees to find their way around.

Labels can also show a QR code linking to a product page, recipes, specifications or reviews. This gives customers more information without cluttering the shelf edge. In electronics and DIY it is a simple way to share technical data, and in grocery the code can link to ingredients or origin.

Installation without closing the store

We start with a site visit to review shelving, chillers, the network and the connection to your POS or ERP system. You then receive a proposal covering the number of labels, sizes and base stations. Installation takes place outside opening hours, section by section, so the store can stay open as usual and customers do not notice the work going on around them.

Once the labels are in place, we test the price flow with you and show staff how the system works. With a service agreement you then have one contact for support, replacement of damaged labels and updates. We install across Sweden, whether it is a single store or a roll-out across an entire chain.

Frequently asked questions

How much do electronic shelf labels cost?

The cost depends on the number of labels, the sizes needed, the size of the store and how the connection to your POS system works. After a site visit you receive a clear proposal. Many retailers compare it with the staff time currently spent on paper labels when building their business case.

Will ESL work with our POS system?

The ESL system picks up prices and product data from your POS or ERP system, often via a file export or an interface. We review the system you use during the site visit and explain how the connection can be set up. If any adaptation is needed, it is included in the proposal.

How long do the label batteries last?

Batteries normally last for several years, although this depends on how often prices change and how much the light is used. Battery status for every label is visible in StoreIQ Hub, so replacements can be planned in good time rather than after a label has gone blank.

Does the store need to close during installation?

No. We fit labels and base stations outside opening hours, one section at a time. The store can trade as normal, and we test the price flow before handing over. The number of visits needed depends on the size of the store and the number of labels.

Can the labels show the lowest price from the last 30 days?

Yes, if the price history is held in your ERP system, the label can display the previous price during a price reduction. How the rules apply in a specific case should be checked against guidance from the Swedish Consumer Agency, as there are exceptions, for example for some perishable goods.
